Senior Staff Software Engineer - Pricing and Packaging

Gusto is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer and Tech Lead to drive the technical direction of their internal Commerce Platform within the Pricing and Packaging team. The role owns the architecture and delivery of systems powering product packaging, pricing, and delivery for small business customers. This hybrid position is based in San Francisco, CA.

• 10+ years of software engineering experience
• At least 2 years in a tech lead or staff engineer role setting technical direction for a team
• Mastery in at least one programming language such as Ruby, Java, Python, or Go
• Deep experience building and operating large-scale backend platform systems in commerce, billing, subscription management, pricing, and packaging domains
• Strong command of distributed systems, API design, and service reliability practices with experience defining and meeting SLOs in production environments
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with AI tools like GitHub Copilot or Claude Code
• Proven track record of leading cross-functional technical initiatives and influencing stakeholders
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
