Staff Software Engineer, Tax Experiences

Gusto is seeking an engineer for its Tax Engineering team in San Francisco, CA, to build and improve the systems that handle payroll, tax collection, calculation, filing, and compliance for small businesses. The role involves full-stack development, collaborating across departments, mentoring peers, and applying AI tools to simplify complex tax workflows.

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Expertise in React and TypeScript
• Experience with Ruby on Rails, SQL, or other backend languages
• Experience working in large, complex codebases and designing, building, and testing production-level code at scale
• Experience applying AI tools to accelerate development, improve code quality, and build testing, alongside familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows
• Ability to communicate technical complexity clearly to product and design partners and navigate tradeoffs
• Strong systems thinking capabilities to build mental models of unfamiliar systems and produce clear analysis
• Requirement to travel two days to a Gusto office for onboarding
